CBIC has launched an awareness campaign to combat customs-related frauds where imposters posing as Indian Customs officers exploit the public through digital platforms like phone calls and SMS. The campaign includes newspaper ads, SMS/emails, and social media initiatives. CBIC urges the public to be vigilant and offers protective measures:

  • DISCERN: Indian Customs never request payments via phone, SMS, or email. Disconnect suspicious calls and ignore messages.
  • PROTECT: Safeguard personal information (passwords, CVV, Aadhar number) and refrain from sending money without verifying identities.
  • VERIFY: Genuine communications from Indian Customs include a Document Identification Number (DIN), verifiable at https://esanchar.cbic.gov.in/DIN/DINSearch.
  • REPORT: Report fraud cases promptly to www.cybercrime.gov.in or call helpline number 1930.

Fraudsters commonly use tactics like fake calls/SMS pretending to be courier officials demanding customs duties, pressuring individuals to pay clearance fees for parcels, or falsely claiming packages are seized for illegal contents.
